The carbon challenges of the Agri-food sector

The food system is at the heart of the issues related to climate change, as the second largest emitter of greenhouse gases, the first victim of climate change, but also as the bearer of many solutions to the problem. The "food system" is at the heart of our lives. It encompasses all stages of production, distribution and consumption of food. It also integrates the interactions between population development, nutrition, food, health, agriculture and the environment.According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP, 2022), the food system alone could generate the failure of several Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations (UN) but also the non-fulfillment of the objectives established by the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

How can companies - from all sectors - participate in the decarbonization and transition of the agri-food sector?

Through this sectoral study we will see that there is a diversity of possible actions for companies in the agri-food sector to have a direct impact on the GHG emissions of the agri-food sector. In a second step this sectoral focus studies the levers of contribution that companies from all sectors can mobilize to also participate in the transition of the food system, while improving their competitiveness.
